Week 5 of the Know Your First Year Connections Peer Mentor spotlight is here! Today’s post features Adam McInnis, a third year Peer Mentor from the HMC Campus! He is going to shed some light on being a Peer Mentor and his first year experiences!
1. What program are you in?
Bachelor of Business Administration – Marketing Management
2. What is the best part about being a Peer Mentor?
I love being able to help out other students when they need it. It’s a rewarding experience that benefits both parties involved in the mentoring process.
3. Give us a fun fact about you?
I love hearing a good pun. If you see me around please tell me your best “pun” liner. Thanks!
4. Why did you decide to become a Peer Mentor?
I decided to become a peer because I wanted to help new students transition to the Sheridan community and feel welcome in the process.
5. What was your first year like?
Quiet to say the least. My first year was a big adjustment period – I had taken a year off after graduating from high school so the transition was an interesting experience. I worked at the Starbucks on campus for the majority of my first year; that was probably the biggest highlight.
6. What advice would you give to your first year self?
Make sure that you balance study time and relaxing time. Find a study system that works for you. I found out that I wasn’t the type of person who could sit and read their textbook for four hours straight. For me, taking lots of breaks was efficient. Stop and grab a coffee, watch a bit of TV or play some video games. Don’t forget that there’s a world outside of school that you can embrace as well.
