“I promise never to commit, condone or remain silent about violence towards women” – Anonymous
Today marks the 28th anniversary of the deaths of the 14 women at Ecole Polytechnique. These women were killed because of their gender. As a commemoration to the victims, Sheridan held a remembrance ceremony at each campus. As peer mentors, we participated by laying a white rose next to each of the victims’ photos.
We wanted to express the fact that each individual is equal no matter their gender, race, sexual orientation, or cultural background. Violence in any form should not be tolerated in any part of our society. As a member of the Sheridan community, we want to ensure that students feel safe and welcome. Should any student feel that they are experiencing hardship, Sheridan offers numerous support services including counselling services, and external resources such as Good to Talk which is a post-secondary student helpline (1-866-925-5454).
