Hi! My name is Brooke, and I’m an Advertising and Marketing Communications student who is going into her second year. I decided to become a peer mentor because of how much the First Year Connections program helped me during my first year at Sheridan. At my previous post-secondary, this program did not exist, and I was not aware of all of the resources that could have helped me to succeed to be the best that I can be. Now at Sheridan, I’ve taken advantage of these resources – I have a great GPA, am involved with extra-curriculars, I know where to go for any problems that arise, and am really owning my experience at Sheridan. My advice to first year students is to form positive relationships with your instructors. By building rapport, completing assignments with clarification and on time, and being engaged during class, I have had opportunities presented to me by instructors that would have otherwise gone over my head. It’s who you know!

Fun fact: I have a tea cupboard of 40+ teas, and growing. My favourite teas usually have grapefruit notes, and I’ve never met an oolong that I haven’t liked.

I am entering my 3rd year of the Human Resources program, and I’m beyond excited that I get to spend my last year at Sheridan as Peer Mentor! Who knows?  Maybe I’ll be back! Many will ask why did I become a Peer Mentor? The answer is because I wanted to give back. Sheridan and its community of teachers, students, and staff, have given me more than an education. They’ve inspired me to become the best person I can be. I know, I know… It sounds corny, but it’s true! Not only am I a Peer Mentor this year, but I’m also the Vice President of Communications of the Human Resources Student Association and the President of the Women in Business Club. I’m passionate about the Sheridan College Community and encourage everyone to get involved, attend events and join a club! It’s the difference between a good college experience and an incredible college experience!

Fun fact: I’m a huge gamer! My favourite game is Starcraft. I love hiking, camping, and canoeing and usually spend my summers in British Columbia.

Hello, my name is Quynh. I’m currently going into my third year in the Honours Bachelor of Business Administration – Finance. I became a Peer Mentor because I wanted to give back to the community and share my first year student experience because I understand how it is to feel nervous on the first day of class, to not know where things are and to be thrown in an unfamiliar environment. And let me tell you, things truly get better with time. Sheridan has allowed me to meet some of the greatest people that I have ever known. It has taught me to keep going no matter what and thus, here I am today. If there’s one thing I could take away from my experience as a first year student is to not lose hope when things are tough! Every experience is a learning experience and as such, there are many available resources on campus to take advantage of to ensure your success such as tutoring, co-curricular and student advisement.

Fun fact: I have moved 4 times from Quebec City to Montreal to Toronto to Mississauga. As such, I still find myself mixing up a few words in different languages during a casual conversation. It could be along the lines of “I would like to eat an apple” as “I would like to eat un pomme!”
